Vought F4U Corsair

Affectionately known as "The Hog" by her American fighter pilots, this fighter is one of my all time favorite aircraft of World War II. It's gull wing design was unique and creative for its time.

It was nicknamed the Whistling Death by the Japanese and if you have ever heard a Corsair in flight, especially in a dive it does make a whistling sound.

There are some excellent references books available for the Corsair. Here are some I think are pretty good.

Dana Bell is probably the foremost author and expert on the F4U Corsair. His two most recent works include Volumes 1 and 2 of the Corsair from the beginnings of the F4U Birdcage Corsair (Vol. 1)  to the F4U-1A and beyond which is covered in Volume 2. I recently acquired Volume 2 and plan to use this book as a reference for my  1/32 Tamiya F4U-1A Corsair build.

Detail and Scale has a nice book which I have and use for my references at the moment.

SAM Publications also offer a very nicely detailed book on the Corsair with modelling references.

The Aero Detail books are excellent aircraft references for the modeller. I have this book which I purchased from well known armour modeler and author Tom Cockle. The book has nice photos of restored aircraft which might not be totally accurate but the drawings are fantastic. I used this book as a reference when I built my Tamiya 1/48 scale Corsair which can be seen on the site.
